Big Data and the Consumer Experience

Speaker:

Ajit Sagar

Associate VP, Digital Transformation Practice
Infosys

Track: Cloud Computing & Big Data

New developments in Cloud technologies have revolutionized the way organizations interact with their customers. Today it is all about Consumer experience, Consumer insights, Consumer behavior, Consumer Journey. The fact that many of the vendors with marketing product stacks have all rechristened their offerings under the “Consumer Experience” banner is. With rich media, the very focus of digital marketing and commerce has shifted from product-centric to consumer centric.

Cloud computing has enabled the global access for consumers across the world – for the right person, at the right time, and the right content. The side effect of this is consumers are more empowered and therefore have much higher expectations. And the omni-channel nature of basic consumer interaction leads to very high demands on the ability to consume, analyze, and repurpose data to deliver a much more personalized consumer experience. Without the advancement in Big Data technologies, this would quickly become an infeasible and unmanageable situation.

This session will focus on the application of Big Data to the business of digital commerce and marketing leading to digital transformations in the enterprise, with real-world examples. As with any new technology, the challenge is to leverage and apply it appropriately to specific scenarios in the industry. Some situations require aggregating data from multiple sources and repurposing consumer data to lead to better offers and recommendations for sales. Others require leveraging the information gathered from implicit consumer interaction with information from other digital touch points to create a 360 degree view of the consumer. All of these require decisions such as segmentation of data across brands, business units, markets, and products, as well as technology choices and on premise and off premise solutions for managing the data. In this session, we will cover these trends, and strategies on how to address multiple problem scenarios.

Day 2 Keynote | How to Maintain Relevancy in a Cloud World: A Step-by-Step Approach to the Future Business of IT

Speaker:

Lisa Larson

Vice President of Enterprise Cloud Solutions
Rackspace

Track: All Tracks

Let’s face it, developers rule. They have instantaneous access to technology resources that can be spun up easily without your knowledge. It is this pressure that is driving the inevitability of Cloud adoption across enterprise IT. If you still think of your IT organization as a cost center - presiding over a hefty annual budget and responsible for doling out dollars to the developers - then it’s time to rethink and re-imagine the business of IT.

If IT continues with the same old tired cost models and budget planning cycles, some of the best, most creative and most ingenious innovations in technology will never see the light of day. It’s a true dilemma for developers and innovators – why spend time creating, when your next great idea or project doesn’t meet the initial business case requirements for funding? But that was the old world of IT.

The hard truth is that IT organizations are faced with a fundamental choice: resist or transform. CIOs can either accept the fact that they are now service providers competing with external vendors for budget dollars, or become impediments to change and lose relevance. Those choosing to become service providers are finding they need to develop a new operating model for IT, one that requires new platforms, processes, and skills.

Join Lisa Larson, Rackspace VP of Enterprise Cloud Solutions, as she redefines the role of IT and shows you how successful organizations are becoming Services Providers to the business. By following a series of proven steps, modern IT organizations can focus on the needs and outcomes required by the business. This model requires CIOs to shift from their traditional role of “operator” to embrace a new role as “innovator”.
  • Innovate with a cloud-first mindset
  • Transform by reimagining IT as a Service Provider
  • Get back to business basics by focusing on your applications and core business competency
  • Enable your game-changing business and technology strategy with hybrid cloud
Now is the time for IT to reform, renew and revise its role by becoming strategic advisor to the business. Be sure to join Lisa Larson during this transformative discussion and come prepared to change the way you think about delivering the business of IT!

Encryption - Getting Peace of Mind in Cloud

Speaker:

Rafeeq Rehman

Senior Solutions Architect
Verizon

Track: Enterprise Cloud Computing

Security remains a high consideration for adoption of Cloud. Protection of data is at the center of a Cloud security strategy. Where the data is stored, how the data is secured, and who has access to the data? Encryption is one of the key technology to address these concerns, securing data in the cloud, and to provide piece of mind to Cloud adopters.

Like any other technology, no single solution fits all scenarios. Should you use full disk encryption, database encryption technologies, or an encryption gateway? Is there a need to encrypt backup data? You have to address these and many other questions while planning for an encryption solution. There are many considerations related to transparency, usability, and ease of management. There are also issues related to who owns, manages, and has access to encryption keys. On top of that, a solution that works well in an IaaS cloud may not work well in SaaS environment.

This session is to explore encryption options and solutions in different scenarios at a high level so that the attendees can make right choices and avoid common pitfalls.

IT as a Service: Bye Bye to Buying Products, Say Hello to Buying Services

Speaker:

Louis Naugès

Co-Founder & Chief Cloud Evangelist
Revevol

Track: Hot Topics

We are entering the age of ITIR, IT Industrial Revolution, thanks to the growth of Cloud and SaaS solutions, and this will change fundamentally the way organizations buy their IT, for infrastructure and applications.

The old way of selecting an IT solution was based on the idea that "needs were more important than solutions" and required a long and complex process: asking users to write a 200-page document with their needs, writing a request for proposal, sending it to vendors, waiting for answers, building the solution...

The "new way" is based on a revolutionary idea: "good solutions pre-exist for most of our IT needs" and we will be buying IT solutions like we buy cars:
  • Writing a one page summary of our needs, looking at the available solutions on the market and selecting one of the possible answers based on performances, perceived quality and prices.
  • CIOs will become "services providers" for their internal and external clients. They will need to develop a new skill, a thorough knowledge of all the solutions which exist on the market, like doctors who know which medicine is best for you when you come with a problem.

Securing Identities in the Cloud: Simple Methods, Satisfied Customers

Speaker:

Michael O'Malley

VP of Product Marketing and Management MYDIGIPASS
VASCO Data Security

Track: Cloud Storage, Security & Performance

As web applications continue to proliferate, identity theft and fraud expand to chronic levels in the US. Back in 2006, the FTC reported over 8M victims of identity theft with cases costing $5000 and 1200 hours to repair the damage, and it’s only gotten worse since then. MasterCard and Visa spend over a billion each year to fight identity theft and web companies are increasingly the subject of class action lawsuits due to online security breaches. Web companies need to find a safer method for securing the identity of their users. Thankfully new cloud solution companies are responding, offering solutions with strong authentication and the convenience of the cloud and your mobile device. These solutions can be easily deployed utilizing new technologies like secure QR codes, smart silicon embedded in laptops and tablets, and secure mobile apps. Recently, a few ASPs like Twitter and Facebook have deployed SMS authentication for additional security. These incremental steps are moving in the right direction but fall short of what is required to stop hackers. This presentation will discuss the challenges to securing customer accounts, leverage research from UCLA and others as to why SMS authentication falls short, and discuss new technologies that can be leveraged for a new breed of cloud based authentication solutions. Business cases will be presented showing how ASP s can secure their users and build trust with these new technologies which have an ROI measured in months not years.

Strategic Transformation to Next-Generation Big Data Platform

Speaker:

Tony Shan

Strategic Technologist

Track: Cloud Computing & Big Data

This session will present a methodical approach of effectively transforming a complex heterogeneous IT environment to a big data-enabled technology ecosystem. First we introduce a pragmatic methodology that provides a step-by-step process to systematically develop and migrate existing applications and databases to a new paradigm: Discover, Evaluate, Analyze, and Recommend (DEAR). Then we drill down to individual components in this method, such as current state diagnosis, future state formulation, gap analysis, roadmap generation, and incremental implementation.

Afterwards, a real-world business scenario in an industry vertical will be presented, where we apply this comprehensive method to execute a holistic transformation. We dive deep to the key barriers, limitations, and issues in specific use cases, which help derive the core technical requirements for the new platform in this case study. Multiple options in the technology components are short-listed and assessed via qualitative and quantitative evaluations. Prototypes are further developed to conduct trial runs on the final candidates with specific test cases and justification criteria. Best practices and lessons learned about big data, advanced analytics and public cloud services will be discussed in the session.

The Intelligence Inside: How Developers of Cloud Apps Will Change the World of Analytics

Speaker:

Karl Van den Bergh

Jaspersoft

Track: Hot Topics

According to IDC, we spent over $34 billion on business analytics in 2012. To put that in perspective, that's more than the GDP of 100 of the world's countries. And Gartner's 2013 survey of over 2000 CIOs worldwide, puts business intelligence at the top of their technology priorities. Given this spend and focus, it's shocking to realize that according to the BI Scorecard only 24% of today's information workers actually have access to BI tools, and that number has stagnated even with the advent of new technologies like data visualization. What gives? The reality is that most information workers don't spend their day working with a BI tool, nor do they want to. They already have their preferred applications. So, what can be done?

This session will discuss how Cloud application developers hold the key to making analytics more pervasive within the enterprise. We'll analyze emerging business models and technologies that are enabling developers to easily and affordably inject intelligence inside the applications they build, bringing information TO knowledge workers rather than expecting them to go find it. We'll also look at how some of the world's leading companies are already doing this and the benefits they're seeing from this approach.

The State of the Cloud Union

Speaker:

Rachel Reinitz

Distinguished Engineer and CTO
IBM Software

Track: Enterprise Cloud Computing

With the ever increasing pace of change in business, line-of-business groups are demanding new application creation in days rather than weeks or months. Since the traditional IT application development cycle is ill-suited for this type of quick application development, we’re seeing CMOs and LOBs turning to “boutique shops and shadow developers” to get their applications developed more quickly: applications that are often developed by stitching together services that reside in the cloud.

In this session, Rachel Reinitz, Distinguished Engineer and CTO of IBM Software Services, will discuss the State of the Cloud focusing on IBM’s view of what is needed in the Next Generation Cloud Platform and how new and emerging cloud technologies will affect both business groups and IT. During the presentation, you’ll see a demonstration of BlueMix, an IBM strategic initiative based on Cloud Foundry that provides developers a way to quickly compose services to create applications running in a cloud environment without dealing with the underlying infrastructure, resulting in a quicker time-to-value for our customers.

WebRTC: Test then Disrupt

Speaker:

Jason Miller

Product Marketing Manager, Service Assurance
Empirix

Track: OpenStack Fundamentals / WebRTC

With WebRTC, customer interactions that start on the Web will be able to stay on the Web, giving users a simple path to fulfilling any number of service needs when connecting with a company. Contact centers that implement WebRTC solutions are going to find value in simplifying their networks and being able to provide multi-services through a single interface: the web browser. They’ll also benefit from the customer insight efficiencies WebRTC can deliver when interacting with customers.

For instance, when Customer Service Representatives (CSRs) are interfacing with customers via WebRTC, interactions are driven from an HTTP/application/browser data path. Therefore, additional context about each customer will be available. This, in turn, will arm CSRs with business intelligence, so they can immediately understand why customers are calling and how to address their needs. This efficiency can drive productivity and increase customer satisfaction.

So, the promise of WebRTC is huge, but companies understand they cannot go public with new technology solutions that may have poor voice quality or drop an important customer’s connection. Paying off the promise of WebRTC starts with getting a thorough, user-side view of voice, video and data quality and other performance metrics for both the WebRTC-enabled application and the UC/contact center environment as a whole.

This session will walk participants through methodologies and best practices organizations should adopt in order to ensure they can implement an effective testing regime that can realistically simulate the WebRTC-enabled infrastructure, usage loads and the resulting end-user experience to pinpoint potential weak links in the real time communications chain.

After participating in this session, attendees will walk away with a solid understanding of how to determine which WebRTC applications will integrate best with existing infrastructure to avoid expensive rip-and-replace scenarios while ensuring the smooth integration of new WebRTC-enabled communications.

Kubernetes has been widely adopted by the community, supported on all major public and private cloud providers, and is gaining rapid adoption in enterprises. However, Kubernetes may seem intimidating and complex ...
While the focus and objectives of IoT initiatives are many and diverse, they all share a few common attributes, and one of those is the network. Commonly, that network includes the Internet, over which there isn't any real control for performance and availability. Or is there? The current state of the art for Big Data analytics, as applied to network telemetry, offers new opportunities for improving and assuring operational integrity. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jim Frey, Vice President of S...

As we enter a new year, it is time to look back over the past year and resolve to improve upon it. In 2014, we will see more service providers resolve to add more personalization in enterprise technology. Below are seven predictions about what will drive this trend toward personalization.
IT organizations face a growing demand for faster innovation and new applications to support emerging opportunities in social, mobile, growth markets, Big Data analytics, mergers and acquisitions, strategic partnerships, and more. This is great news because it shows that IT continues to be a key stakeholder in delivering business service innovation. However, it also means that IT must deliver new innovation despite flat budgets, while maintaining existing services that grow more complex every day.
Cloud computing is transforming the way businesses think about and leverage technology. As a result, the general understanding of cloud computing has come a long way in a short time. However, there are still many misconceptions about what cloud computing is and what it can do for businesses that adopt this game-changing computing model. In this exclusive Q&A with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan, Rex Wang, Vice President of Product Marketing at Oracle, discusses and dispels some of the common myths about cloud computing that still exist today.
Despite the economy, cloud computing is doing well. Gartner estimates the cloud market will double by 2016 to $206 billion. The time for dabbling in the cloud is over! The 14th International Cloud Expo, co-located with 5th International Big Data Expo and 3rd International SDN Expo, to be held June 10-12, 2014, at the Javits Center in New York City, N.Y. announces that its Call for Papers is now open. Topics include all aspects of providing or using massively scalable IT-related capabilities as a service using Internet technologies (see suggested topics below). Cloud computing helps IT cut infrastructure costs while adding new features and services to grow core businesses. Clouds can help grow margins as costs are cut back but service offerings are expanded. What do you get when you combine Big Data technologies….like Pig and Hive? A flying pig? No, you get a “Logical Data Warehouse.” In 2012, Infochimps (now CSC) leveraged its early use of stream processing, NoSQLs, and Hadoop to create a design pattern which combined real-time, ad-hoc, and batch analytics. This concept of combining the best-in-breed Big Data technologies will continue to advance across the industry until the entire legacy (and proprietary) data infrastructure stack will be replaced with a new (and open) one.
While unprecedented technological advances have been made in healthcare in areas such as genomics, digital imaging and Health Information Systems, access to this information has been not been easy for both the healthcare provider and the patient themselves. Regulatory compliance and controls, information lock-in in proprietary Electronic Health Record systems and security concerns have made it difficult to share data across health care providers.

It's a simple fact that the better sales reps understand their prospects' intentions, preferences and pain points during calls, the more business they'll close. Each day, as your prospects interact with websites and social media platforms, their behavioral data profile is expanding. It's now possible to gain unprecedented insight into prospects' content preferences, product needs and budget. We hear a lot about how valuable Big Data is to sales and marketing teams. But data itself is only valuable when it's part of a bigger story, made visible in the right context.
Cloud Expo, Inc. has announced today that Larry Carvalho has been named Tech Chair of Cloud Expo® 2014. 14th International Cloud Expo will take place on June 10-12, 2014, at the Javits Center in New York City, New York, and 15th International Cloud Expo® will take place on November 4-6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Everyone talks about a cloud-first or mobile-first strategy. It's the trend du jour, and for good reason as these innovative technologies have revolutionized an industry and made savvy companies a lot of money. But consider for a minute what's emerging with the Age of Context and the Internet of Things. Devices, interfaces, everyday objects are becoming endowed with computing smarts. This is creating an unprecedented focus on the Application Programming Interface (API) as developers seek to connect these devices and interfaces to create new supporting services and hybrids. I call this trend the move toward an API-first business model and strategy.
We live in a world that requires us to compete on our differential use of time and information, yet only a fraction of information workers today have access to the analytical capabilities they need to make better decisions. Now, with the advent of a new generation of embedded business intelligence (BI) platforms, cloud developers are disrupting the world of analytics. They are using these new BI platforms to inject more intelligence into the applications business people use every day. As a result, data-driven decision-making is finally on track to become the rule, not the exception.

Many organizations are now looking to DevOps maturity models to gauge their DevOps adoption and compare their maturity to their peers. However, as enterprise organizations rush to adopt DevOps, moving past experimentation to embrace it at scale, they are in danger of falling into the trap that they have fallen into time and time again. Unfortunately, we've seen this movie before, and we know how it ends: badly.
Remember the Y2K bug, the computer coding flaw that was predicted to cause global havoc when the two-digit dates embedded in software rolled over from 1999 to 2000? After organizations around the world spent a year checking and upgrading their systems to deal with the issue, few major problems ended up occurring. The world is now on the brink of what could be called the Y2K bug of data privacy – the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), tough rules that require companies to be more transparent about the information they collect on individuals and how it is used.
SYS-CON Events announced today that DXWorldExpo has been named “Global Sponsor” of SYS-CON's 21st International Cloud Expo, which will take place on Oct 31 – Nov 2, 2017, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA. Digital Transformation is the key issue driving the global enterprise IT business. Digital Transformation is most prominent among Global 2000 enterprises and government institutions.
Without a doubt, we’re at a tipping point when it comes to security and the Internet of Things (IoT). Recently, security flaws have been exposed in consumer products, including children’s toys, baby monitors, cars, and pacemakers. In late October 2016, Dyn®, an internet infrastructure vendor, suffered a malicious DDoS attack that was achieved by leveraging malware on IoT devices such as webcams and printers that were connected to the Dyn network. No, IoT security concerns are not new. In fact, any device that’s connected to a network represents an opportunity for malicious activity. But what...
If you read a lot of business and technology publications, you might think public clouds are universally preferred over all other cloud options. To be sure, the numbers posted by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft’s Azure platform are nothing short of impressive. Statistics reveal that public clouds are growing faster than private clouds and analysts at IDC predict that public cloud growth will be 3 times that of private clouds by 2019.
From personal care products to groceries and movies on demand, cloud-based subscriptions are fulfilling the needs of consumers across an array of market sectors. Nowhere is this shift to subscription services more evident than in the technology sector. By adopting an Everything-as-a-Service (XaaS) delivery model, companies are able to tailor their computing environments to shape the experiences they want for customers as well as their workforce.
"As we've gone out into the public cloud we've seen that over time we may have lost a few things - we've lost control, we've given up cost to a certain extent, and then security, flexibility," explained Steve Conner, VP of Sales at Cloudistics,in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 20th Cloud Expo, held June 6-8, 2017, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY.
"We provide IoT solutions. We provide the most compatible solutions for many applications. Our solutions are industry agnostic and also protocol agnostic," explained Richard Han, Head of Sales and Marketing and Engineering at Systena America, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @ThingsExpo, held June 6-8, 2017, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY.
"We are focused on SAP running in the clouds, to make this super easy because we believe in the tremendous value of those powerful worlds - SAP and the cloud," explained Frank Stienhans, CTO of Ocean9, Inc., in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 20th Cloud Expo, held June 6-8, 2017, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY.

"DX World Expo has organized these issues along 10 tracks with more than 150 of the world's top speakers coming to Istanbul to help change the world."
If you are thinking about moving applications off a mainframe and over to open systems and the cloud, consider these guidelines to prioritize what to move and what to eliminate. On the surface, mainframe architecture seems relatively simple: A centrally located computer processes data through an input/output subsystem and stores its computations in memory. At the other end of the mainframe are printers and terminals that communicate with the mainframe through protocols. For all of its apparent simplicity, mainframe architecture can be extraordinarily complex. Mainframes process thousands of...
Did you know that the reservations systems of the biggest carriers mostly run on a specialized IBM operating system known as Transaction Processing Facility (TPF). Designed by IBM in the 1960’s it was designed to process a large numbers of transactions quickly. Although IBM is still updating the code, the last major rewrite was about ten years ago. With all the major technologies changes since then, it’s clear that IBM has already accomplished a herculean task by keeping an application viable for over 50 years!
"At the keynote this morning we spoke about the value proposition of Nutanix, of having a DevOps culture and a mindset, and the business outcomes of achieving agility and scale, which everybody here is trying to accomplish," noted Mark Lavi, DevOps Solution Architect at Nutanix, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @DevOpsSummit at 20th Cloud Expo, held June 6-8, 2017, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY.
Runaway cloud computing cost may be causing an information technology industry crisis. Expanding requirements, extended transition schedules and misleading marketplace hype have made “Transformation” a dirty word. Questions about how to manage cost variances and deviations with assets and cost across different suppliers abound. A recent Cloud Tech article explained that while public cloud offers considerable cost savings in comparison to private or on-premises based alternatives, there may also be significant hidden costs. Operational features like auto-scaling can cause costs to soar in li...
For any business to be successful, it must enable talent to focus on the innovation that will drive new value. As digital literacy and dexterity grows, people are increasingly agnostic about devices – they want to be able to access their personalized workspace and services anywhere, at any time, on any device that happens to be at hand. The concept of digital transformation is gathering pace. When Gartner surveyed 388 CEOs recently, 56% said their digital improvements had already increased profits. But there’s also significant pressure, with 47% reporting challenges from the board of directo...
A recent BusinessWeek article titled “America’s Retailers Are Closing Stores Faster Than Ever” summarizes the epidemic that retailers are facing today (see Figure 1). Retailers are closing stores at a record path and the driving force behind the acceleration in store closings is Amazon, who now accounts for over 50% of all on-line retail sales (see Figure 2). What are retailers to do when the tricks and techniques that worked in the past just don’t work in today’s real-time data and analytics driven business world? Business models that worked in a world that valued size and location quickly...
Being a business leader in the established economy is not necessarily a fun job these days. Keeping the competitors at a distance while finding ways to defend the current business model against the Internet giants like Amazon, Google, Facebook etc. is a tough job. However, running a business based on digital disciplines and being prepared with the right armor is simply about doing rather than thinking about the why. As a supporting element, a modern business strategy is built upon a magic triangle that consists of three vertices delivering the necessary essentials: Be digital. Use cloud. Lever...
For over a decade, Application Programming Interface or APIs have been used to exchange data between multiple platforms. From social media to news and media sites, most websites depend on APIs to provide a dynamic and real-time digital experience. APIs have made its way into almost every device and service available today and it continues to spur innovations in every field of technology. There are multiple programming languages used to build and run applications in the online world. And just like every other language, there is always the need for an interpreter when trying to communicate with...
Data reduction delivers compelling cost reduction that substantially improves the business case in every cloud deployment model. No matter which cloud approach you choose, the cost savings benefits from data reduction should not be ignored and must be a component of your cloud strategy. IT professionals are finding that the future of IT infrastructure lies in the cloud. Data reduction technologies enable clouds — public, private, and hybrid — to deliver business agility and elasticity at the lowest possible cost, making cloud the deployment model of choice for IT infrastructure going forward....
In today's cloud based world, automation is key enabler for success. Yet, folks are scared of automation due to risk of losing job. However automation needs to be seen as a way to keep your job in and not out. Wikipedia definition of automation is "Automation or automatic control, is the use of various control systems for operating equipment such as machinery, processes in factories, boilers and heat treating ovens, switching on telephone networks, steering and stabilization of ships, aircraft and other applications and vehicles with minimal or reduced human intervention." The key word in thi...
